External and Corporate Relations Vice-Presidency (ECR)
The mission of External and Corporate Relations (ECR) is to help deliver financial and political support for the World Bank Group, strengthen the Bank Groups role as a global thought leader in development by enhancing and safeguarding its reputation, and supporting operational teams to achieve country outcomes. ECR manages corporate communications and global engagement with key stakeholders, including media, civil society, foundations, private sector, donor countries, and international organizations, as well as employee engagement. ECR also manages strategic communications for the World Banks Regions and Global Practices and leads the management of reputation risk.
The World Banks Media and Messaging Team (ECRME) in Corporate Communications is looking for an External Relations Officer to serve as the writer and editor of the institutions Annual Report, on behalf of the World Banks management and its Board of Executive Directors. The selected candidate will be responsible for writing, editing, producing, and disseminating both the print and online versions of the report. S/he will be based in the World Banks Washington, DC, office, and will report to the Manager of Media and Messaging under the daily supervision of the Sr. Editor/Writer.
Responsibilities
The Annual Report Editor directs the gathering and synthesizing of a large volume of material to produce an accessible, informative, engaging, and visually stimulating report to tell the Banks story and highlight its activities and achievements from the fiscal year. This position collaborates closely with teams across the World Bank Group and will also support efforts to create and guide strong corporate messaging throughout the ECR communications portfolio. In addition, the selected candidate will contribute to other media and messaging deliverables and priorities, as needed.
Specific duties and accountabilities include:
Manage the editorial processincluding writing, editing, production, and disseminationof the World Bank Annual Report, working in close conjunction with key stakeholders and content experts throughout the organization.
Develop the editorial strategy that integrates best practices and input from consultations with key internal clients, including the Executive Directors and management.
Prepare a comprehensive, cohesive, and engaging draft of the report by writing original content and editing contributions from teams across the World Bank; coordinate the internal review and approval of the draft by management and the Board.
Establish and nurture relationships with communication, knowledge, and operational experts throughout the World Bank Group and stay current with subject matter related to Bank Group issues and developments.
Produce a print and online edition of the Annual Report in English, overseeing the design, typesetting, copyediting/proofreading, and printing processes in collaboration with consultants and vendors.
Arrange translation into each of the Banks corporate languages (including Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish) and publish all versions ahead of the WBG-IMF Annual Meetings.
Ensure the accuracy of all data in the Annual Report, in coordination with World Bank operational and financial data teams and external auditors.
Manage the design and development of the Annual Report website in multiple languages.
Manage the marketing and promotion of the report, including through social media and online channels, in coordination with colleagues across ECR.
Liaise with counterparts who produce the annual reports of other Bank Group institutions to ensure consistency of data, messaging, and branding, as appropriate.
Manage and monitor vendor and consultant performance for quality, timeliness, and cost-effectiveness on an ongoing basis.
Support the Media and Messaging team by writing original content on corporate priorities.
Selection Criteria
Masters degree in communications, journalism, political science, international relations, public affairs, or other related field, with 5 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and exceptional ability to write, edit, communicate, and operate under pressure and tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
Self-motivated and creative, with excellent project management and organizational skills, proven ability to perform multiple tasks, and ability to work with both internal and external colleagues.
A sharp analytical mind, good political judgement and diplomatic skills, proven ability to work across teams and issues, and high initiative, energy, and drive for results.
Ability to delegate appropriately and hold colleagues accountable for delivering agreed work programs.
Knowledge of digital platforms, including across social media, and the ability to present data and ideas visually.
Excellent interpersonal skills with experience working across boundaries, and with multiple stakeholders, in building collaborative alliances for results.
